EMPLOYMENT
For states and metropolitan areas, the nonfarm payroll employment data excludes proprietors, the unincorporated self-employed, unpaid volunteer or family employees, farm employees, and domestic employees. This series comes from the Current Employment Statistics program, which surveys approximately 144,000 businesses and government agencies.
For counties, the total employment and private industry employment data includes employment from all business establishments that participate in the unemployment insurance program. These series come from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages program, which collects data from over 9.4 million U.S. business establishments. Source: BLS
